Icebergs are made from frozen freshwater (even though they float in salt water) and break off from glaciers in a process called calvingIcebergs can have the following shapes: tabular, dome-shaped, sloping, pinnacled, dry-docked, blocky, weathered or glacier (irregular shaped). Which shape do you think this one resembles? There are 3 main types of icebergs: 1. Growler (less than 1 meter); 2. Bergy Bit (1 meter but less than 5 meters); 3. Iceberg (>5 meters)Icebergs can be many colors: White is the younger icebergs; Blue is the older ice; Black ice is gorgeous but also harder to see as it’s transparent and heavier; Floating ice sheet; and Dirty ice has sand and mud mixed in This iceberg is camping out in the Antarctic OceanWhite with shades of blue under the water (and a crabeater seal on top)Lichenlike’n the iceberg!Room with a view!Hanging out amongst the icebergs It’s like a wave got caught in the ice!The peaks of this iceberg are incredible!Closer view of those ice peaks This one is a cousin to the StegosaurusAbout 90 percent of the iceberg is below the water’s surface – and this is some old ice due to the beautiful blue colorGrowlers are small chunks of floating ice that rise about 1 meter (3 feet ) out of the water. They are called growlers for the animal-like growling sound the trapped air makes as it escapes when the iceberg meltsOne of our zodiacs exploring. We cannot get too close to icebergs due to calving!Sink your “teeth” into this iceberg!A few wrinkles and blue ice to show it’s age!The light coming through this iceberg was mesmerizing!Something clawed at this iceberg! An ice shelf is a floating extension of the land it is attached to. Antarctica is surrounded by ice shelves. Sea ice is free-floating, contains icebergs, and freezes and unfreezes each season.
